Fees that are reasonable. Affordable living costs. A good education is essential. With all three boxes ticked, it’s no wonder that, despite periodic lockdowns — known in Malaysia as the Movement Control Order (MCO) — since 2020 owing to the COVID-19 epidemic, Malaysian institutions are seeing an increase in overseas student applications for PhD programmes.

According to Education Malaysia Services (EMGS), 11,161 overseas applicants applied for doctoral programmes in public and private schools in 2021. In comparison to 2020, where just 6,348 applications were received, the applicant numbers have nearly quadrupled.

“Malaysia has been the education hub of choice for overseas students pursuing higher education in recent years,” according to an EMGS statement. “It’s intriguing to see that Malaysia today has a big number of overseas students obtaining PhDs.”
